Baby Boom - The Diapercake Story

I have a confession to make -- I am a terrible baker, my banana cake will usually look like it just fell flat on its face or my puddings will taste like rubber. Either the oven hates me or these hands were not made for baking. (perhaps I have other untapped talents rite....<--trying to pacify myself. Heheh)

But what do you know, I FINALLY am good at baking! (well, not really that good but feels rewarding when you see the end product)..baking a Diaper-cake that is! (Hehe I fooled you for a second didn't I?) It's addictive really, once you get the hang of it (making Diapercakes that is) you feel like making more and more and more....

Anyway speaking of making diapercakes, lately it seems that everyone is or will have a lil bub. And for every mom or a mom-to-be they would have different stories to tell for each of their pregnancy. I'm only a mom to a daughter (as we speak) so I can't really compare one pregnancy to another. But I can say that mine was quite alrite (despite having to stop between meetings to throw up and enduring the "almost-wetting-my-pants-everytime-I-sneeze-or-cough") and I was quite surprise at myself for forcing myself to be active all the time. (duh, now that makes sense why Alveena is a handful!) and the feeling of someone growing in your stomach is truly indescribable. It's so surreal that something is growing in your tummy and the fact that the circumference of the belly is growing all angles keeps reality in check. (Don't get me started with the stretchmarks and itchy belly and the "how-come-I-feel-like-the-purple-coloured character-"Grimace"-from-McDonald's-sets-of-friends" and etc) But hey, look at the brighter side:

1) A baby makes love stronger, the days shorter, the nights longer, bankroll smaller, clothes shabbier and a home happier (riteee.....) BUT the past forgotten and the future worth living for.

2) Those who say they "Sleep like a baby', haven't got one. - Anonymous quote

3) Having one child makes you a parent, having two you are a referee - quote from David Frost (perhaps I would understand that when Alveena gets a sibling....)

and finally (for today)..

4) Wrinkles are hereditary - parents get them from their children. - quote from Doris Day    (soooo looking forward to that -__- )

Anyway what I wanna share really is the process of me making the diapercakes. The history is funny actually. I have a girlfriend who was asking me who could make a diapercake for another girlfriend who was gonna expect her lil one soon. She herself was already good at baking and such and here she was asking if I knew anyone who could make a diapercake or perhaps I had the talent to make one. I was like "You've gotta be kidding! Me and my oven, we are not friends YET, but I can recommend you to a friend who can make one".

In my mind, I was all the time thinking a diapercake is a cake that looks like a diapercake (Yep, I know I know, don't give me the look please!!) So in the end I made the extra effort to make use of Google Image. And then i went "Ohhhhhhhhh". Hahaha. Please forgive the naive-ness. And when I wanted to get back to my girlfriend to tell her that I already knew what she was talking about, she had already finished her version of a diapercake. Haha so much of making an impression.

Anyway I was kinda intrigued to try my hands at it, from the ones I saw on the Net they were all neat, cute, colourful and looked soooo easy to make. And so I was just waiting for girlfriends who were about to pop the bun soon. And when I finally got the chance to make these babies, I managed to make both the pink and blue version...yeay!

First, the PINK version...

Getting ready all the baby stuffs..

Then setting the "cake" with diapers...the base, the bottom layer and top layer

Then, arranging them to fit into the "cake" structure..

Finally, a cake fit for a princess!
Oh, the pink bear was kinda tricky to be put as the pinnacle of the cake,
so there was no pink bear in the end. Hehe.

Second try, the blue version..

Laying out all the baby blue stuffs..

Individually wrapping each item with blue ribbons..

The two-tier cake is almost ready..

Let's see if the rest of the stuffs can fit within the "cake"...
Oh shoot, again the soft toy can't seem to find its place on the "cake"..

...But Anyway....it's a wrap baby!!

I think if it's the next time I would have a baby, I'd be happily making my own diapercake and giving it to myself. Hahahaha. It's addictive you guys, you should try it! :)
